The Chikoy National Park was established in 2014 in the south-west of the Trans-Baikal Territory in the upper reaches of the Chikoy River, belonging to the Lake Baikal basin.

"The Chikoi and its tributaries are part of the Baikal basin and play a key role for the taiga ecosystems of the region and its special value – cedar forests, which, in turn, create a unique biodiversity of the territory. It is a food base and the basis for the well-being of populations of raisins, roe deer, wild boar and other animals. The National Park is home to the red Book manul, golden eagle, black stork and white–tailed eagle, and it is important to preserve its pristine taiga," said Alexander Kozlov, Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia.

Since the establishment of the territory, the National Park has been actively engaged in scientific research. For example, in 2023, work on the study of the golden eagle was completed under a grant from the Fund for Support of Applied Environmental Research and Development "Lake Baikal". His staff monitors the yield of cedar forests, records of mouse-like plants and other studies of flora and fauna.
The protected area is currently actively working with schools and kindergartens in the Trans-Baikal Territory. Their pupils participate in eco–educational events of the national park - contests, environmental actions and holidays.

The most important activity of the national park is the development of ecological tourism.
The waterfall on the Melnichnaya River, Mount Barun-Shabartui is the highest point of Southern Transbaikalia, Lake Shebetui are the most popular routes of the protected area. The total length of ecological trails and routes at the national park is 123 kilometers.

In the jubilee year, Chikoy will equip the tourist infrastructure at the Starki and Oskino cordons, as well as the national park will have a new project – the Cedar Tour.
"Our national park is still young, 10 years is just the beginning of the road, but we have achieved a lot. First of all, we have formed a professional team that stands on the "guard of nature". Today, there are 63 employees who devote themselves entirely to their favorite business. I sincerely congratulate the team on the 10th anniversary of the founding of the national park. I thank all the employees for their noble work in the field of nature protection. I wish you health and vitality for further work, peace and warmth in your families, success and prosperity!", commented Vladimir Isaev, Director of the Chikoy National Park.
