The International Energy Saving Day is celebrated on November 11. The main purpose of the holiday is to draw attention to the rational use of resources and the development of renewable energy sources. When obtaining energy from fossil fuels (coal, petroleum products, gas, peat), non-renewable natural resources are exhausted, pollutants and greenhouse gases enter the air. The use of "green" technologies makes it possible to reduce the damage caused to the environment. In addition, energy saving is economically beneficial.

Specially protected natural areas also contribute to energy conservation, which not only ensure the protection and inviolability of natural reserves, but also guarantee that people do not harm nature. Modern technologies developed taking into account strict environmental requirements help to solve this difficult task.

Large-scale work on the introduction of nature-saving technologies has been carried out in the Baikal Nature Reserve in the Republic of Buryatia for more than ten years. Solar power plants, wind generators, and solar collectors are used at the facilities of the security service, science, tourism, and environmental education.

In 2020, a station for converting sunlight and wind energy into electrical energy was opened in the Baikal Nature Reserve. The station provides uninterrupted operation of interactive expositions of the halls "Man and Baikal" and "Baikal Unique" of the Baikal Zapovedny visitor center, allowing to reduce electricity consumption from traditional large-scale power plants.

Renewable energy helps to ensure the operation of the bird watching system in protected areas. A solar power plant complex is operating at the Baikal bird banding station. And in the Kabansky Nature Reserve in the Republic of Buryatia, a project was successfully implemented to introduce a video monitoring system for the white-tailed eagle with online broadcast on the Internet. Visitors to the site could watch everything that happens in the family of eagles at any time: from hatching eggs to the first flight of chicks from the nest. At the same time, the equipment for controlling the camera, assembling and processing video materials was located 3.75 kilometers from the eagles' nest and was provided with energy from natural sources – the sun and wind.

In the Baikal-Lena Nature Reserve in the Irkutsk region, solar panels operate on all five cordons, providing more comfortable working conditions for state inspectors.
