Representatives of the UNESCO mission highly appreciated the role of specially protected natural areas in the conservation of endemic species and the control of anthropogenic pressure.

Both Russian experts and a delegation from Mongolia took part in the meetings with the mission: they discussed the impact on Baikal of the planned construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Egiin-Gol River (Mongolia).

Following the results of the UNESCO monitoring mission, experts noted the high level of involvement of all participants in the conservation of Lake Baikal. The final report will be prepared by March 2024.

Recall that the World Heritage Committee, at the 45th session held in Riyadh under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia, welcomed the allocation of significant federal funding for research, conservation and sustainable development of Lake Baikal. As well as measures to identify and demolish illegal buildings, prevent further illegal construction and improve the waste management system and the tourism industry.
