In Russia, three "aquatic" federal projects are being implemented under the national Ecology project - "Preservation of unique objects", "Improvement of the Volga River" and "Preservation of Lake Baikal". All of them are designed until 2024, but residents of the regions can already feel the positive results of their work.

Since the beginning of 2023, sections of riverbeds in 44 regions of the country have been cleared under the federal project "Preservation of unique objects". The most extensive project was the rehabilitation of the Salgir River and its tributaries. The river is considered the main one in Crimea. Experts have removed 10 kilometers of the water area from sediments and gravel, thickets of shrubs and fallen trees.

As a result of the activities of the federal project "Preservation of unique water bodies", environmental living conditions near rivers have become higher for 14 million people.

"Preservation of Lake Baikal" is another "water" project of the national project "Ecology". Its main goal is to improve the ecological condition of Lake Baikal by reducing the volume of polluted runoff into the lake and other reservoirs of the Baikal natural territory, as well as by cleaning contaminated facilities.

In 2023, 17 unauthorized landfills with a total area of almost 25 hectares were eliminated here. Another landfill was removed within the boundaries of the Baikal National Park near the village of Onguren in the Irkutsk region and about eight hectares were cleared near the village of Taloe in the Tunkinsky National Park. Work on the elimination of almost 16 more hectares of garbage has been postponed to 2024.

The activities of the federal project include large-scale work to eliminate the accumulated environmental damage of the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill. This year, much has been done at the Babkhinsky landfill: the reclamation of map 12 has continued, fencing and installation of observation wells have been equipped, on-site driveways have been installed, and more.
