Environmental monitoring of Lake Baikal

Characteristics of aquatic organisms (hydrobionts)

Below are five graphs with observations of 5 groups of hydrobionts in lake Baikal in 2017, and in 2015 for comparison. The x-axis shows the months of 2015-2017, and the y-axis shows the average value of the population or the total mass index for the time of observation. Each chart has the dash-lines consisting of horizontal lengths of the survey time (1-3 months)

Heterotrophs (Bacterial plankton)

Phytoplankton

Zooplankton

Bacterial benthos

Zoobenthos

The analysis of hydrobiological characteristics for 2017 indicates a certain decrease in anthropogenic load on zooplankton in the area of municipal wastewater discharge of the Baikalsk city in the under-ice and autumn periods. The area of contamination of bacterioplankton and the number of microflora in the under-ice and spring periods were lower than in the autumn period. In bottom sediments in all the observation seasons the decrease in contaminated areas and the number of bacteriobenthos in them has been noted.

The analysis of state of hydrobionts in the northern part of lake indicates the preservation of anthropogenic pressure in the area. The most polluted waters are in Rel, Tyya, Kichera, Upper Angara and Tompa rivers.
