In general, the radiation situation in the Baikal natural area (BNA) in 2016, as in previous years, remained favorable, and the levels of environmental pollution posed no threat to the population.

In 2016, the parameters of radiation situation did not exceed the critical values. A slight increase in the maximum exposure dose rate (EDR) (by 3 per cent) was observed in the Irkutsk region, and a decrease was noted at the rest of the BNA. There was a decrease in the maximum accumulated beta activity of atmospheric precipitation in the Trans-Baikal Territory (by 18 per cent) and the Republic of Buryatia (by 53 per cent) and an increase in the maximum values in the Irkutsk region (by 7 per cent). Within the Irkutsk region, an increase in the concentration of radioactive aerosols (by 27 per cent) is observed.
