Wildlife

The data were provided by the following organizations: Siberia Branch of Rosgeolfond FGUNPP

The monitoring of the wildlife, not included within a list of objects of hunting and fishing, shall be performed by the reserves, national parks and scientific organizations. The information about this group of animals is irregular and fragmented. There is no statistical reporting available.

Irkutsk Region The wildlife of the Irkutsk Region features 86 species of mammals, 402 species of birds, 6 species of reptiles and 5 species of amphibians. Out of those, 6 species of mammals and 43 species of birds are specially protected ones and have been included in the Red Book of Russia. In addition, 2 species of amphibians, 2 species of vermigrades, 62 species of birds, 17 species of mammals, 14 species of crustaceans, 10 species of insects, 12 species of fish were included in the Red Book of the Irkutsk Region in 2010.

The following species of mammals were included in the Red Book of Russia: Pribaikalsk species of the black-capped marmot, Sayansk-Altaysk species of reindeer, red dog, manul cat, snow leopard (ounce). The majority of species included in the Red Book of the Irkutsk Region account for the birds. The category of the probably extinct species includes 5 species: Dalmatian pelican, swan goose, gray goose, red-footed falcon, bustard. Category 1 -- endangered -- includes 5 species -- Taiga bean goose, Baikal teal, imperial eagle, saker falcon and Asian dowitcher. Category 2 -- threatened -- includes 2 species of birds in the Irkutsk Region. Category 3 -- rare -- includes 33 species of birds. Category 4 -- with undefined status -- includes 14 species of birds. The population of the 3 previously rare species has recovered and they have been included in Category 5 -- restored species: great-crested grebe, common cormorant, roody shelduck.

2 species out of 5 species of amphibians, present in the Irkutsk Region are included in the regional Red Book (Siberian toad and common toad).

The region hosts 6 species of reptilians, 2 of which are included in the regional Red Book (Dione snake, grass snake).

In addition, the Red Book of the Irkutsk Region includes a list of the animal bodies, not included in the Red Book, but requiring particular attention. It includes 44 species of insects, 1 species of vermigrades, 32 species of birds, 7 species of mammals.

Republic of Buryatia The wildlife of the Republic of Buryatia is quite versatile -- over 4,000 species of arachnids, over 3,000 of insects, 6 species of amphibians, 7 species of vermigrades, 92 species of mammals and 383 species of birds.

The Red Book of the Republic of Buryatia of 2005 includes 23 species of mammals, 72 species of birds, 5 species of vermigrades, 2 species of amphibians, 31 species of insects, 6 species of fish, 15 species of scuds and 1 species of annelids. The following species are under a threat of extinction (with a rapid decrease in their population): mammals -- red dog, snow leopard, otter and reindeer; birds -- common cormorant, swan goose, steppe eagle, Pallas' sea eagle, black vulture, gerfalcon, saker falcon, hooded crane, bustard, black stork, Bewick's swan, Baikal teal, harlequin duck, fish hawk, imperial eagle, ern, lesser kestrel, penduline tit, small snow finch; vermigrades -- Mongolian racerunner, Pallas' coluber, grass snake.

Zabaykalsky Krai The Krai hosts over 500 species of vertebrates, including over 80 species of mammals, over 330 species of birds, 5 species of amphibians and 5 species of vermigrades. 4 species of the mammals became present in the Krai via the acclimatization process, including muskrat, raccoon dog, brown hare and American mink. Relatively low diversity and population of amphibians and vermigrades is due to quite rigid climate condition within the habitat.

The basin of the Khilok River features an immense migration corridor, enabling a path for bird fauna. Overall, the bird population seems to be close to the Taiga population.

The lists of wildlife and flora objects, included in the Red Book of the Zabaykalsky Krai, have been approved by Regulation of the Zabaykalsky Krai Government No. 51 dated 16.02.2010. The list of wildlife objects includes 24 species of bivalved mollusks, 75 species of insects, 4 species of vermigrades, 1 species of amphibians, 14 species of bony fish, 66 species of birds and 21 species of mammals. The list of probably extinct animals includes 2 species, endangered -- 60 species, threatened -- 29 species, rare -- 84 species, with undefined status -- 28 species, restored and within the restoration process -- 2 species of animals.
