Scientists called the earthquake the most powerful for the middle of lake Baikal since 1999

A powerful earthquake that occurred in Buryatia on Thursday night was the strongest for the middle of lake Baikal since 1999, Director of the Baikal branch of the Unified geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences Elena Kobeleva told TASS.

"Yes, such a strong [earthquake in the middle of lake Baikal last time was] in 1999, because in 2008 we had the Kultuk (this is the South of lake Baikal), Bystrinsky [earthquake] (this was the Sayan fault, also South), and in the middle of lake Baikal were weaker, but with such a strong magnitude since 1999 was not", - said Kobeleva.

According to her, such an earthquake should have been expected, but it is impossible to predict it. This seismic event was the fourth earthquake on lake Baikal this year, the power of which exceeded four points.

Earlier, the Ministry of emergency situations of the Irkutsk region reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.5, the intensity in the epicenter-7.6 points. Residents of Irkutsk at 05: 45 local time (00:45 Moscow time) felt tremors with a power of 5-6 points, tremors were also felt in seven municipal districts of Buryatia. There were no reports of damage to buildings.
