Baikal will be protected much better than any other water bodies in the world

On April 5, 2019, TASS held the press conference concerning the initiative of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation to amend the outdated standards governing the limits of impact on the unique environment of Baikal Lake and preventing renovation of the water treatment plants.

The event was attended by Ivan Valentik, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, Aleksey Tsydenov, the Head of the Republic of Buryatia, Vadim Kantor, the Minister of Natural Resources of the Republic of Buryatia, Endon Garmaev, the Director of the Baikal Institute of the Nature Management of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science, and Nikolay Buduev, the Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Natural Resources, Property and Land Relations of the State Duma.

For the purpose of implementation of the “Baikal Lake Preservation” national project, providing for construction in Buryatia of 21 advanced treatment plants until 2024, the scope of Appendices 1 and 2 to the Order of the Ministry for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Russian Federation No.63 “On Approval of Standard Limits of Impact on the Unique Ecosystem of the Baikal Lake and List of Hazardous Substances, including those Referred to Extremely Hazardous, Highly Hazardous, Hazardous and Moderately Hazardous for the Unique Ecosystem of the Baikal Lake” must be revised.

“The limits offered in the new version of the order have been adjusted from the point of view of the current situation in the Baikal Lake, while remaining as rigid as before, e. g. as regards the concentration of phosphates, lead, aluminium and phenols. More importantly, they will enable the construction of the advanced treatment plants and our unique Baikal will be protected much better than any other water body in the world, moreover a set of measures, including, among others, the liquidation of objects of the accumulated environmental damage must be in place” - said I. Valentik.
