The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, taking into consideration of the position of public and animal protection organizations, has taken the decision to abandon the original idea of partial authorization for hunting the Baikal seal and to preserve the total ban on it.

The Baikal seal is the only species of seals in the Eastern Siberia, living in the fresh water of the Baikal lake. Hunting of this animal was banned in the year 2009, the right to hunt seals was left only for the indigenous people living near the Baikal lake, as well as for the scientists.
