Updated edition of the Red Book of Irkutsk region

The new edition of the Red Book of Irkutsk region will be released in 2020. This was reported by the Director of the Baikal Centre for Field Research “Wild Nature of Asia” Mr. Viktor Popov and Head of the Department of Biology and Soil Faculty of the Irkutsk State University Mr. Andrey Lishva.

The Red Book is edited on a regular basis. In 2017, one species of shellfish and leeches, and four species of mushrooms were included in the list of endangered animals. Some birds such as common cormorant, booted eagle and sheld duck were brought to the category of “restored species”. Sophora flavescens, golden eagles, golden saxifrages, and two species of lichens were included in the endangered plant species.

One of the reasons of extinction of plants is unlimited herb gathering for the herbal medicine. The second reason is the increase of recreational load. The reduction in the number of some of flora and fauna species has also been affected by timber harvesting, gas and oil.

The Red Book of Irkutsk region includes in total 173 species of plants, 28 species of mushrooms, 18 species of mammals, 62 species of birds, 50 species of lichens, 40 species of mosses, 12 species of fish and 10 species of insects, 2 kinds of sponges, one species of molluscs and amoebae, two species of shellfish and amoebas, two species of reptiles, 14 species of crustaceans.
