A giant ice ring is formed in Lake Baikal
“The ice ring in diameter up to 7 km is supposed to be formed in March in the central part of Lake Baikal, which will increase a risk of falling people and technical specialists under the ice,” the press service of FSBI “Zapovednoe Podlemorye” reports.
Currently, scientists believe that warm vortices existing in the Baikal water column cause the rings, which have a weak current in the centre and a strong current with warmer water at the border.

The portal has been created for FSBI ”Informational and Analytical Center for Development of Water Bodies and Associated Properties” under the special program “Protection of Lake Baikal and Socio-Economic Development of the Baikal Natural Preserve for 2012-2020.”
